During the seditions and outrages of 1857, how- ever, rumours reached the Resident at Hyderabad that the Bajah was engaged in treasonable practices, and Captain Bose Campbell, second Assistant Eesident, was sent to Shorapore to institute inquiries. The Rajah at first utterly denied the truth of the accusations against him ; but after continued remonstrance and advice, he confessed that he had ordered the enlist- ment of a band of mercenaries, and directed them to assemble at Shorapore. A detach...ment of the Hyderabad contingent was at that time engaged in preserving the ' peace of the country, and on the 7th 810 OUB FAITHFUL ALLY, THE NIZAM. of Febinarji 1858, was encamped before Shorapore. About 5^ P.M. this detachment was attacked by the Bajah's troops, who continued to harass it by firing at intervals until midnight. One of the Bajah's jemadars, Bulwunt Rao, had that day been on an amicable visit to Captain Campbell, and the attack by the Bajah's troops was alike unprovoked and treacherous.
