Competition steadily increased for the Heights. The pub- lic high sch...ools increased in number from 80 to 800. When Professor Brown suffered a stroke in 1942 it was decided to discontinue the school after the summer session.
The professor's daughter, Mrs. Watson, remembers the last session. "We held a final assembly, tolled the bell once, and closed the school." Most of the items of historical interest went to the state Capitol building museum, but Mrs. Brown herself still keeps many of the old records. Pictures of her students still hold 54 prominent spots in her home, and a newly-tinted picture of "Prof" stands on a hall table.
