Work found full scope for his powers, and he arranged with Messrs. Boot& Cady, of Chicago, to write exclusively for them. His world renowned war songs "Babylon is Fallen, " "Song of a Thousand Years, " "March- ing Through Georgia" and "Wake Nicodemus" were first published by this firm, and all had immense sales. "Marching Through Georgia" was Work's most successful song, and its stirring melody is as popular to-day as ever. After the close of the war Mr. Work made an extended tour through Europ...e, and while on the sea wrote his renowned song entitled "The Ship That Never Returned. " Among the songs written by Mr. Work during the later years of his life we may mention "Come Home Father" and "King Bibler's Army, " both of which are famous temperance songs. His "Grand- father's Clock, ' "Phantom Footsteps, " "The Lost Letter" and "The Prayer on the Pier" have all had extraordinary sales. Mr. Work's domestic life was saddened by the insanity of his wife, who died in an asylum for the insane in 1883.
