Semi-Pelagianism was an attempt to avoid both extremes. In making this attempt, while it escaped from the chief evils of Pelagianism, it was not altogether free from error. It held to the truths that man is bom in original sin, is free, and can do what is good only by the help of God's grace. It was touched by Pele^gian error in denying the necessity of divine grace to enable man to wish for and choose that which is good.^ Semi- Pelagianism was condemned by the Second Council of Orange in ...a.d. 529. This Council definitely asserted the necessity of divine grace both to lead man to choose what is good and to enable him to carry out his choice. The canons of the Council were directed against Semi-Pelagianism, but, in order to avoid exaggerations in the other direction, the following statement was added to them : * When grace has been received through Baptism, all the baptized, by the help and co-operation of Christ, are able and ought to fulfil those things which pertain to the salvation of the soul, if they are willing to labour faithfully.
