Those who are familiar with the method of this holy Doctor know that he frequently speaks of things according to the ideal which they ought to attain, and not according to the state in which they actually are ; also, that in his controversial writings, it is often difficult to be sure how far he is speaking according to the mind of his adversary rather than according to his own ; meeting him on his own ground, as it were.
