To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
All processes for making ferrous sulphate yield dilute solutions, which are best evaporated by direct application of heat to the sur- face of the liquid (see 6, p. 4), thus preventing oxidation. After clarification, the liquid is put into large lead-lined tanks, in which strings or wooden rods are suspended; on these the large bluish green crystals of ferrous sulphate form. The crystals contain 7 molecules of crystal water ; when heated to 140 C. , 6 molecules of water are expelled, but the las...t molecule is not removed until the temperature reaches 260 C. ; at this temper- ature, some of the acid begins to escape, and the formation of the basic salt begins. At a red heat, sulphuric anhydride is given off, and ferric oxide is left. The crystals of ferrous sulphate effloresce quickly when exposed to the air, their surfaces becoming coated with a brownish white powder of basic ferric sulphate, formed by oxidation. Ultimately, the entire crystal is converted to this basic salt. By adding alcohol to a ferrous sulphate solution, the salt is precipitated in fine crys- tals, which are much more stable in the air than are the ordinary kind.
