In practice, it may be prepared by the oxida- tion of numerous organic substances. One of the most con- venient methods of laboratory preparation upon the small scale is the vigorous oxidation of cane sugar by means of nitric acid. For technical purposes, the salts may be ob- tained by heating the formates to about 450° with exclusion of air: CO • ONa 2HCO-ONa = H 2 + I CO • ONa The more usual method of technical production consists in the fusion of sawdust with a mixture of sodium and potas- 1...38 OUTLINES OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY sium hydroxides at a temperature of about 220°. Hydrogen gas is evolved during the operation. The melt is first leached out with water, the solution containing a mixture of sodium and potassium oxalates along with other soluble impurities. From this solution, the addition of lime pre- cipitates insoluble calcium oxalate, which may then be purified and decomposed with the calculated quantity of dilute sulphuric acid. Insoluble calcium sulphate is pro- duced, while oxalic acid remains dissolved.
