As by inductive methods we certify these data to ourselves, so by deductive me- thods we realize' to ourselves all the subor- dinate truths or laws which are involved in them ; and which truths, on account of the methods by which they are obtained, have been termed necessary truths: although it must be obvious that no derivative truth can have any certainty in it, greater than that which is contained in the truth from which it is derived.
