Libre di denari ; al quale palio si corra solennemente ne la detta citta di Siena, secondo che di volonta de r officio de li signori Nove procedara et alloro parr a che si convenga. . . . Et le predette cose si comincino a fare del mese d'agosto prossimo che verra, el quale sara ne I' a...nno presente Domini Mcccx ; et ad essecutione si mandino. . . .^ This, as far as I am aware, is the earliest mention of the Palio of Mid- August to be found in the Sienese Costituto ; but it would be a mistake to suppose that it owed its origin to that enactment. As early as 1238, we find it recorded in the Libro dei Pretori, that, during the term of office of the 1 C. Falletti-Fossati, op. CiL, p. 217. The custom is still observed on the evening of the 14th of August.
