Here a landing was made with one hundred men. Gonzales had gone inland a few miles when, to his surprise, he Nicwagua came to the shore of a great fresh-water lake. This was Lake Nicaragua. It is marked as No. 4 on Map V, p. 94 and it is very desirable that we should see exactly where it lies. The lake is one hundred and seventeen, miles long, or about half as long as our Lake Erie, and covers three thousand square miles. Gonzales sailed up the lake to its outlet, the San Juan river, and then d...own this stream to the Atlantic. Here, surely, w^as an easy way from the Atlantic to the Pacific, — only one hundred and seventy miles and largely by water. It seemed as if a canal might be built at Nicaragua. Spanish surveyors also declared, at this time, that a canal could be built across Panama. So, for a time, the Spaniards had high hopes of building a canal. It was not long after this, however, that Spain came to feel that if easy ways across Central America could be found or built, other nations might steal away from her the rich pos- sessions in the New World.
