Also in 1898 the port of Weihaiwei was leased for so long a period as Port Arthur should remain in the hands of Russia, the object of which was to provide Great Britain with a suitable naval harbor in northern China and for the better protection of British coimumerce in the neighboring sea^. In view of the possessions held, Great Britain has a sphere of influence in the Yangtze Valley and Germany a similar area of about 2, 750 miles, but now extended to the whole of th- Province of Shantung.
