In 1859, the mountain again threw out streams of lava, which uniting, and cutting a deep canal through the soil more than fifty feet wide, ran nearly sixty miles in three days, and debouched into the sea. And again, in 1868, after a long succession of earthquakes, and ejections of mud and hot water, the lava burst forth, and flowing upon the graziug- plains below, consuming houses, trees, and 112 PARADISE IN 111K PACIFIC.
