In 1845 he removed to Rome, Ga., and organized a Presbyterian Church there, of which he was pastor until 1856, when he became President of the Rome Female College, and its pro- prietor in 1863. He died Sept. 21, 1892. Mrs. Caldwell was educated at the Troy (N. Y.) Female Seminary under Mrs. Emma Willard, and became a teacher in Caswell County, N. C, in a boarding school for girls, conducted by Rev. Mr. Richard, where she met Rev. J. M. M. Caldwell, whom she married in 1844... A year later they ...removed to Rome, Ga., the chief town of Cherokee (now Floyd County), from which the Indians had only recently been removed to the reservation. She was a woman of rare intellectual powers and great administrative ability. She devoted her life to teaching; hrst in a private school for girls, and then for more than thirty years in the Rome Female College in what was practically a frontier settlement, and it would be hard to overestimate the part played by this noble and cultured Christian lady in the upbuilding of the whole section of the State of Georgia, in which her life work was spent.
