...in the introductory remarks, the research method employed in this phase of the research involved a survey questionnaire administered to forty-eight middle level cost-center managers employed by a large San Francisco Bay Area manufacturing company. These managers were drawn from eight separate functional divisions of the organization, each of which was involved in one phase of the production or distribution activities of the business. Preliminary meetings with plant management indicated that technological and environmental characteristics, while not critical in and of themselves, varied somevhat across the divisions, resulting in the use of a variety of managerial approaches.
