Twenty miles, I think, was the distance which I rode from Alford, before I reached the camp ground, where religious exercises were just commenc- ing. In an hour or two after the close of the first service, I met with this old gentleman in the preachers' tent, and to my astonishment was introduced to him as Bishop George. My astonishment was the greater, be- cause I had heard him preach eight years be- fore, and yet I did not dream that this was he. Had I dispossessed him of his chair, it would have mortified me much, but I presume he would have passed it over with the utmost kind- ness.
