Martin was appointed by the county court as school commissioner for Livingston county on November 5, 1853. This lavv' remained in force till amended in 1865, when the Legislature abolished the office of county school commissioner and creat...ed the office of school superintendent. The first superintendent was appointed by the county court who held office till the next general election, when he was elected for a term of two years. The county court was required to fix his compensation at so much per diem. This led to widespread complaint, as in many of the counties the superintendent would visit a school when he was engaged in other business, and charge up his per diem and traveling expenses to the county. On that account the Legislature passed the act of March 26, 1874, which abolished the office of county school superintendent and created the office of county school commis- HISTORY OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY 179 sioner.
