Knight,' Von Thiimen,^ and some other European writers have in- sisted that continued propagation by buds, cuttings, etc., leads to de- generacy, and there is a very general impression among farmers and fruit-growers that varieties "run out." This theory is not wholly un- reasonable, and yet a vast amount of careful experimenting must be done before it can be said to rest on any broad basis of well-established facts.
