Far detached from the life of the settlers on the Delaware, an episode of romantic interest claims attention before we dismiss this period. It relates to the discovery of western Pennsylvania by white men. We have described the exploration by Cham- plain's guide, Etienne Brule, in middle Pennsylvania, in 161 5-16. We turn now to the probable discovery of the Alle- gheny and Ohio rivers by La Salle, in 1669.
