Whereas it is generally understood that Mr. Gladstone's sentiments towards Prince Bismarck were not quite free from a suspicion of furor monachorum. If Mr. Gladstone, when last in Germany (1895 ?), had called at Friedrichsruh, I am perfectly certain that Bismarck would have been pleased to see him, and would have received him with all that marked courtesy and distinction which he always extended to eminent political compeers.
