His academic background included degrees in law and medicine; his literary works walk the thin boundary between non-fictional genres such as the essay and history, and the fictional cnadro de costumbres . Fuentes, however, is of interest to the student of costumbrismo in post-Independence Peru for three reasons: His sketches are an example of the cuadro's hybrid nature, halfway between fiction and non-fiction; one of his works, Biograffa del murejglago contains the first description of customs outside Lima; and he marks the culmination of an interest in national themes and types that began with Segura and Pardo in the iSUO's.
