If from astronomical works we turn to those which treat of the kindred department of optics, we find ourselves again brought into converse, and that more frankly, with the cone, though under the name of pencil. Its sections, especially those which we have shewn to be the most important in the science of beauty, viz., the ellipse and the hyperbola, are con- stantly presenting themselves.
