" Socrates in Plato," remarks Montaigne acutely, " disputes, rather to the profit of the disputants, than of the dispute. He takes hold of the first subject, like one who has a more profitable end in view than to explain it ; namely, to clear the understandings that he takes upon him to instruct Sind exercise." Just there, in fact, is the justification of Plato's peculiar dialectical method, of its inexactness, its hesitancy, its scruples and reserve, as if he feared to obtrude knowledge on an unworthy receiver.
