To this end he had gathered about him one of the best companies of players in the metropolis, and, aided by a stage manager who understood to perfection the manipulation of stage crowds, so essential to every stirring melodrama, and by some of the cleverest of London's scenic artists, he was in a position to show theatre-goers that even a sensational and exciting play could be given so skilfully as to win for it respect as a work of art.
