In 1858 treaties (peace, amity, .unrestricted commerce) concluded with the United States (Tovms^end Harris), Great Britain (Elgin), France, Russia, — all signed by the shogun. 1859. Yokohama, Nagasaki, Hakodate, opened to trade. These unwarranted assumptions of power on the part of the shogun angered the mikado and the Kioto court, where the foreigners were regarded with deep distrust.
