What reading level is Poets And Prose Writers of New South Wales book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
A series of political sketches were contributed by Mr. Dalley to Punch a short time ago, entitled, Political Biographies, and in these he has described, with exquisite irony, the most prominent of our political characters. The following is devoted to Dr. Lang : We are told in the Lives of the Illustrious Fathers of the Catholic Church, that when a rather pretentious Prelate held the see of Ravenna, during the Pontificate of St. Gregory the Great, it was his custom (the archi-episcopal Brummell)... to wear his pallium, not only in the services of religion, but as an ordinary decoration. Thereupon, we are informed, St. Gregory wrote him a severe reprimand (the letter is extant) telling him that no ornament shines so brightly on the shoulders of a bishop as humility. Had John Dunmore Lang occupied the see at that time, the letter never would have been written. The adorning virtue of the episcopate is the characteristic one of our subject. We cannot give an idea of his splendid career. We propose simply to sketch his character.
