Waller was arraigned at Guildhall, and (it is said in some lives of him) was condemned to death. After being imprisoned for a year, and after having bribed to such an extent that he very largely decreased his estate, he was liberated on paying a fine of io,ooo/. and undertaking to leave the country. He retired to France, and lived first at Rohan, then in Paris. During his exile in 1645 he published the first edition of his poems.
