Inspector "Dick" Hughes, as he is known to his legion of friends was born in County May...o, Ireland, and came to this country while a very young lad. His family settled in San Francisco, where young Hughes got his education.
When he was 24 years of age he took the police examina- tion, and on May 25, 1911, was sworn in as a member of the San Francisco Police Department and he donned his police uniform on June 1, 1911, being assigned to Com- pany F. Here he distinguished himself as but few rookie policemen have the opportunity of doing.
In the late months of 1912 and the early months of 1913 a gang of burglars was tearing up the residential dis- trict of the Park, Richmond and the old Western Addi- tion.
