To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
A mutual friend advised us to go down to the Hall of Justice and see Lieutenant Murray about this ambition. The Lieutenant was very critical and informed us it was necessary that we be 21 years old, five foot, nine in height and 150 Inspector Vincent Lynch pounds in weight. In the matter of all three we assured him we were just inside the limit. Standing in front of the Hall of Justice we did not know the name of the little green park there with the Robert Louis Stevenson monument in the center.... Neither did we know the questions he asked about the street cars passing in front of the Hall of Justice. On the way from this discouraging interview we pur- chased Candrian's city guide and thoroughly realized we needed intense preparation if we were to be police officers. On later visits the Lieutenant was more encouraging, in fact, he praised us for our efforts. Thus, in time, we became police officers. During our years in the police department we kept in daily contact with each other. I could not do otherwise, because Vincent was a great pal and a staunch friend who always looked for the silver lining in even the darkest cloud.
