SS4 GENERAL PLATOFF. 1'he present war has brought ij^o action the Cossacks, and helped to solve a military question that has long been agitated. The Cossacks nialie war much in the manner of the ancient Scythians and Parthians. Their coun- try is not far distant, and their manner of life nearly the same. As the Scythians and Parthians were, the most formidable enemies the Romans had to encounter, so the Cossacks have been found extremely formi- dable to the moderii conqnerors. There is a sort o...f analogy that merits notice between the resistance made by those barbarians to the Roman arms, and that of the modern brave Cossacks, not only in the manner of the resistance, but in the circumstances under which it took place. The Roman empire had attained its greatest extent, when, in the mere wanton lust of conquest, its £;^enerals carried their arms against Parthia. The more civilized and wealthy nations of the world had either submitted through fear or force, to GENERAL PLATOFF. 285 the Roman yoke; and resistance was at last succeeded by a gloomy and quiessent submission to the will of a conqueror that was reckoned irre- sistible.
