To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

But if no dispassionate observer can recog- nize Cicero, the bas-relief is nevertheless of high interest in its details. You see the victim — an ox — led forward by the popa, or person whose office was to slay it. He bears in his hand the sacrificial axe {inalleiis\ and is stripped naked to his waist. At the altar stands the chief priest, or perhaps magistrate, his brow bound with a triumphal wreath, and his robes partly drawn over his head. In his hand he holds a patera^ with which to lustrate... and sprinkle the victim. Behind him, carrying a vase and another patera, stands a youthful acolyte, with the sacred vitta^ or fillet, hanging from his neck. Near him is a figure also holding a patera, which, apparently, is heaped with cakes. A musician lustily sounds a tibia or double flute, and in the rear gather the Uctors with their fasces. The temple is represented in the background, adorned with garlands and fes- toons.
On the opposite side of the altar, young olive-trees are sculptured, and between them a crow^n of oak leaves, bound with the sacred vitta ; on the other two sides, you may trace the various implements and ornaments of sacrifice, as the vase, the patera, the vitta, the censor, garlands, a ladle, and a spiral instrument, which mayhap belonged to the haruspex, who examined the entrails of the victims, and from their appearance divined the future.
