Sir, — I have seen your Portrait of Washington — I think it the best likeness of him, when in the vigour of life, I ever saw on canvass.
I had many opportunites of seeing and observing his person, and particularly his face and features, in the time of the revo- lution ; I have been in battle immediately under his command.
T have viewed him frequently on horseback and on foot, walk- ing, standing, and sitting. I have seen him at a game of ball for several hours, exhibiting the most manly and graceful atti- tudes I ever saw.
