In 1847 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of the State of New- York, and in the year fol- lowing was elected Governor of the State for two years. He declined are-election in 1850, and in 1851 was elected to the Senate of the United States for the full term of six years. 40 41 JACOB W. MILLER, Senator from New-Jersey, is a native of Morris county, New-Jersey, and is now in the fifty-fifth year of his age, though he appears many years younger. At the age of sixteen he abandoned the study of the ...classics and engaged in mercantile pursuits, but three years after resumed his studies and entered a law office. In September, 1823, he was admitted to the' bar, and commenced the practice of law at Morristown, where he has ever since resided. In 1832 he was elected a member of the State Legislature. The next year he declined a re-election, and returned to the practice of his profession. In 1839 he was elected to the State Senate. In the winter of 1841, he was chosen United States Senator for six years, and first took his seat on the 4th of March, 1841.
