It is therefore with the ship's head by compass, that the observations are made, but thedeviations being different at each point, when the ship's head is put on opposite points by the compass, the two positions are not actually opposite to one another as they should be, for the rigorous application of the method, and as we have supposed them to be in the elemen- tary explanation which we have just given.
