Lessening of the lumbo-sacral curve, and so alteration of the plane of the pelvis (zv<^^ p. 112). Areolar hyperplasia is said to be a cause ; it is more often an effect.
Symptoms. — Feeling of bearing down, especially backwards ; mechanical difficulty in defaecation from pressure of the retroflexed fundus ; if the angle of flexion is somewhat acute, uterine tenesmus, occasion- ally dysmenorrhea ; rarely, from the flexion alone, sterility ; leucorrhea, areolar hyperplasia of the pos- terior lip with consequent menorrhagia, piles.
Signs. — The os uteri is usually felt to be directed more or less forwards and downwards, the cervix lying more or less backwards ; on carrying the fingers along the posterior aspect of the cervix, a sulcus is reached and a swelling is discovered behind the cervix ; pressure by the bi-manual examination may show this to be probably the retroflexed body, but to determine the question the sound is to be used. It will be found usually to pass upwards and a little RE TROFLEXION.
