To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

Chickens cannot be fed too frequently when they are young. They may have food every hour from sunrise to sunset, if possible, until they are a fortnight old, but only as much as they will clear up, as no food must be left lying about, or they will become dainty.
After the chicks are a fortnight old every two hours will be sufficient up to a month, after which they may be fed every three or four hours.
A mixture of meals is very good for feeding chickens, such as a blending together of buckwheat
... meal, barley and maize meal, locust meal and sharps, when they are growing large.
This frequent feeding is, of course, for chickens in con- finement, as when they get a wide range, especially after the middle of April, in a field or orchard, they pick up a good many insects, and so do not require so much other food.
84 WILLIAM cook's POULTRY BREEDER AND FEEDER.
Chickens thrive best when fed on groats, -but as these are rather expensive it is best to give them biscuit meal wher* they are a week or a little more old, and this may be varied occasionally by the use of a little other meal, such as buck- wheat meal, ground maize, oats, &c.
