The number of manufactories in the State, as shown by the United States census of 1860, was 4,268 ; while by the State census, taken in 1865, the number returned was but 3,500. While the value of the manufactured products in 1860 amounted to $57,586,886, ni 1865 their value was $63,356,013. The value of flour and meal pro- duced in 1850 was $5,781,483 ; in 1860 it was $18,104,804. Notwith- standing these flattering ...showings, it is nevertheless a fact that Illinois is, and for some years to come is destined to remain, the granary of the great North-west rather than its workshop.
Internal Improvements. — In the year 1836, when, stimulated by the policy of the Federal Administration, the local banks throughout the countrv had greatly extended the volume of their circulation, and men ran not in a spirit of speculative adventure, the State of Illinois projected an extravagant system of internal improvement. Various rail- way enterprises were inaugurated, only to be brought to a sudden detd halt by the insatiable revulsion that followed in the wake of that policy.
