For the which cause a man leaveth father and mother, and cleaveth to his wife ; whom he ought to love, as our Saviour loveth the Church, for the which He gave His life. Likewise also it is the wife's duty, to study to please and obey her husband, serving him in all things that be godly and ho- nest : for she is under the governance of her husband, so long as they continue both alive.
Here the Minister speaketh to the parlies that shall be married, in this wise : I require and charge you, as ye ...will answer at the day of judgment, when the secrets of all hearts shall be disclosed, CONFIRMATION OP MARRIAGE. 77 that if either of you do know any impediment, why ye may not lawfully be joined together in matrimony, ye confess it. For be ye well assured, that so many as be joined otherwise than God's Word doth allow, are not joined together by God, neither is their matrimony lawful.
If no impediment be by them declared, then the Minister saith to the whole Con- gregation : I take you to witness that be here present, beseeching you all to have good remembrance thereof : and moreover, if there be any of you which knoweth that either of these parties be contracted to any other, or knoweth any other lawful impedi- ment, let them now make declaration thereof.
