The relationship upon which you have entered, is one which in- volves the discharge of serious and important duties, and is not to be lightly gone about. In respect of the obligations which it sup- poses, we find clear and explicit directions given in the inspired Word, which is meant to be a directory of our conduct.
Therein it is said, " Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved his chui'ch, and gave himself for it ; " and from the reciprocal nature of this connection, there must be cor...responding duties arising out of it. It pre-supposes love, confidence, and esteem ; and as the relationship is one that is to last during life, it should be the aim of both parties concerned, that those feelings of mutual confidence and esteem which have induced them to think of a marriage union, instead of decreasing, should be augmented with each successive year that passes over their heads.
The connection is therefore one which should be entered into in that " fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom." With reference to those obligations which are specially binding upon the husband, — he is called upon to love and cherish his wife, with all honour and fidelity ; to guard her from injury as the weaker vessel ; in the assiduous discharge of the duties of his lawful calling, to make provision for the wants of those whom God has entrusted to his keeping ; and, as occupying the position of the head of a house- hold, to rule that household well in the fear of the Lord ; showing a becoming regard in his daily life for the relative, social, and reli- gious duties.
