In this class some confusion is hardly avoidable in applying the correct names to the instruments, as the majority of travellers were not careful enough in distin- guishing a guitar from a harp or mandoline, the speci- mens used by savage... races being so different in shape from the corresponding modern instruments.^ Of course, where a detailed description of the instrument is given we may easily correct inappropriate terms. Where, however, the instruments are not accurately enough described, we will simply follow the original terminolog}'.
The name guitar is most frequently mentioned. The Dor have three different kinds of this instrument ; one can be tuned by means of a ring passed over the neck which can be slipped up or down ; besides this, however, the notes cannot be altered by pressure of the fingers upon the string.
