...ks may pass before the consolidation entirely disappears and the function of the lung is restored. On the other hand, the lung may never clear up, but, by fault of a fibroid overgrowth starting in the interalveolar structures, become the seat of a dense cirrhosis which obliterates the air-cells and greatly contracts the pulmonary parenchyma. In other cases pulmonary abscess is the sequel of a delayed resolution, and, rarely, gangrene develops. Tuberculosis may follow pneumonia, should the latter light up a quiescent tuber- culous lesion.
