The salts of didymium are pink or violet colored, and when in. solution, even in small quantities, absorb powerfully certain rays of light ; and the spectrum of a luminous flame viewed through such a solution shows a strong absorption band in the yellow and another in the green. As these bands differ wholly from those of erbium, they enable us to recognize with certainty the presence of didymium, as none of its associated elements produce any such effect.
