Hence an ordinary air-pump is the same apparatus as a suction-pump, the difference consisting mainly in the valves, and in the fact that it becomes necessary to counterbalance or remove the pressure of the air on the upper surface of the piston, otherwise the labour of working an air-pump would be insupport- able.
