To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
In all cases and in each case, the sacra- ments of the Church are conferred by GOD to the soul, alone. In short, both GOD and His Church deal with us, as. We are fain to treat ourselves, our children, our friends, our penitents not in the gross, but individually. Hence, it is not un-meet to hold, in systematic meditation upon primary truths, that in each case two points of view have to be considered, though much flows from them, the divine and human ; that two beings alone are existent in the w...orld, though much is con- nected with them, GOD and the soul of man. A Retreat is no unfit time to meditate on the soul and its GOD alone. This three-fold division of the subject, the Image of GOD in relation to sin Man made, bought, and made again, I may repeat, nearly exhausts or includes all the more impor- tant relations between GOD and the soul on the side of sin. It represents three great primal positions in which the crea- ture can stand in the presence of the Creator. Firstly : the state of nature, prior to the state of grace : when sin is nega- tive more than positive ; when it consists in the absence rather than the presence of something, and is not actual but original ; when, if the equilibrium of the forces of good and ill is not perfect, yet the forces of evil are at least undeveloped ADD.
