They were tested 482 SIGNS, FENCES AND CROSSINGS. as cantilever beams 4 ft. long, with a gradually increasing load concen- trated at the end. The types of posts described above with their reinforcement are illustrated on Plate 1. The Water Department of Washington, D. C, has used a great many concrete posts in fencing its reservoirs and property in the northwest section of the District of Columbia. The posts used in this work were 6 ft. long, 4% by 4%. in. at the top and 6 by 6 in. at the bottom and were made in wood forms by employes of the Department. The reinforcement consisted of four ^4-in.
