General. — The study of ramps for railway buildings is a subject upon which, although there is only a limited amount of data available, the results obtained from the major installations studied are of sufficient scope to indi- cate a broad field for the efTective application of ramps in railway building construction.
Pedestrian Ramps. — The ranip.s for pedestrian use in the Grand Central Station, New York City, ...have been in service over a sufficient number of years to have passed beyond the experimental period and are therefore cited in this report as examples of good practice. The Chicago Union Station, a terminal of more recent construction, is also referred to because of the satisfactory results that are being obtained from their ramp construction.
In designing the ramps for the New Yt)rk Central Terminal, experi- mental ramps were built which were ascended by persons carrying bags and other burdens.
