While Mr. Foley's primary interest was in cross ties, he was also recognized for his wide and detailed knowledge of matters relating to all uses of lumber, as well as the preservative treatment of wood. He served 18 years as a member of the Committee on Wood Preservation and represented the Association on the Central Committee on Lumber Standards, serving for an extended period as its chairman. He was a fellow in the Society of American Foresters, a member of the Advisory board of the Charles Lathrop Pack Forestry Foundation, and a past-president and honorary member of the American Wood- Preservers' Association.
