ANALYTICAL.
To precipitate lime and magnesia carbonates from hard water it is only necessary to remove from the water the carbonic acid gas that holds them in solution. Common slaked lime is the cheapest known chemical that will do this and not leave any by-product in the water.
To precipitate lime and magnesia sulphates from' hard water it is necessary to decompose them. Carbonate of soda, commercially known as soda ash, is the cheapest known chemical that will do this. It leaves dissolved in the water as a by-product sulphate of soda.
