To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Bonding It is desirable to bond the joints in the conductor rail to the full current-carrying capacity of the rail. A type of bond that is widely used for bonding the joints of 150-Ib third rail in heavy service consists of two tinned copper bars and two heat-treated bolts. When installed the joint is welded, bolted, and soldered and provides an average of 110 percent conductivity (Fig. 16). Gaps in the third rail at special-work in the tracks are bridged by cables which are bonded to the ends ...of the rails. The distance between front and rear collector shoes is greater than the longest gap in order to supply current continuously. 7. Miscellaneous Requirements Expansion Joints Expansion joints, similar to Fig. 9, are usually installed, underground, in the third rail at intervals (usually about 10 per mile) to allow for longitudinal movement of the 472 Electricity rail due to temperature changes. These joints are constructed to permit longitudinal movement of the rail but restrict lateral movement of rail ends.
