They have seen a power created ^by themselves, or permitted by their acquiesence, to grow up in their midst, until it threatens to make their laws, to dictate to them what they must pay for their food, fuel and clothing, and even names the price of the commodities they have to sell.
We have this humiliating condition to contemplate, that, widely separated as are the different sections of our nation, every iron highway that leads from one city to another, from one State to another, and over which, owing to the great distances which sepai-ate the one section from the other, all our com- merce and people must travel.
