It is now^ some twenty years since Fate sent me to a part of the world where goitre was extremely common. I found my- self, in 1902, posted as agency surgeon in hill stations situated in the Hindu-Khush region of Northern India, first in Chitral and later in Gilgit. The nearest railroad station is at Raw^alpindi, some twenty days* journey by tonga, boat, horse and mule from Gilgit.
